What kind of mobile phone do I need?

Our service only works with Java enabled mobile phones that are capable of installing a SIM, and that use GSM networks.

To truely roam the globe, your phone must be at least tri-band, though quad-band phones are recomended for full global coverage.

Is my handset compatible?

Your handset needs to be “unlocked” to be able to use a RoamingSIM. The best way to verify this is to remove your existing SIM card and replace with a SIM card from another operator (i.e. if you are on Telstra, try an Optus or Vodafone). If it says “SIM not valid” or “blocked” it is likely that the phone is locked. Also, if you place your RoamingSIM into your phone and you receive a message “SIM not valid”, your phone is locked. Should this be the case, you will need to contact your provider to have it unlocked. Alternatively, you could borrow a handset, or consider purchasing our phone pack which includes an unlocked handset.

Where exactly can I use my RoamingSIM SIM?

Anywhere in the 213+ countries we offer coverage, as per our "Coverage" page, provided you are within network coverage.

Can I call and text anywhere in the world?

Yes. And anyone, anywhere in the world can call ot text you at any time, provided you are within network coverage. If you are not in network coverage, or your phone is powered off, those calling you can leave you a voice message on your RoamingSIM Voicemail, which you can then access from your RoamingSIM phone.

What is a SIM?

A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) is a removable smart card for mobile phones that use the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) mobile network. The SIM card allows users to change phones by simply removing the SIM card from one mobile phone and inserting it into another mobile phone.

The SIM card is what we sell you as part of the RoamingSIM service.

What is an unlocked mobile phone?

An unlocked mobile phone is not tied to any particular network. You can put any SIM in it and it will register the SIM and connect to the appropriate mobile network operator.

It is fairly common in the European market. However, in the North American market it is not as common to see unlocked mobile phones.

Your phone may be locked if you purchased it on contract or pay as you go account.

To check if your phone is locked call your mobile service provider.

Not sure if your phone will work where you roam?

Check your phone manual, and find out what operating frequency your phone will run at. For standard phones, they can run at 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, and this will be stated in your phone's manual. There are also 3G phones that operate at different frequencies, so if you have a 3G phone, find out what frequency it runs at.

Once you have all this information, contact Customer Support with this, where you are travelling to, and we will let you know if your phone will work there.

Does the credit or SIM card expire?

The SIM card never expires and any unused credit remains on the card.

What currency is the balance?

Your balance is displayed in EURO.

How do I check my balance?

Send an SMS with the word bal to 1966. An SMS with your balance will be returned immediately.

How do I know how much a call will cost?

It is always best to refer to the “rates” section of our website. These may change occasionally as we negotiate better rates.

How much will it cost family and friends to call me on my RoamingSIM?

Your RoamingSIM comes with a European landline number (+32XXXX) which is also your SMS number.

Rates to call this number depend upon the chosen telecom provider and, as rates vary we are unable to provide an accurate answer. If you have a local Australian number attached to your RoamingSIM, this is the best way for friends and family to contact you at the lowest rates. It is also the lowest cost way to divert your existing mobile. Costs for this are also determined by your telecom provider. Australian local numbers are available to purchase at a nominal monthly fee.

If you are not using the local number facility, then often the best way for family and friends to contact you is by using a low-cost calling card to dial your international mobile number.

How do I make Calls?

RoamingSIM uses a method called Callback to connect the call. To make a call follow these instructions:

1. Dial the number in full international format (eg +613XXX)
2. After dialing, there will be slight pause and the phone may not look like it is doing anything
3. In approximately 10 seconds your phone will then call you back
4. Answer the call normally and wait to be connected

Apple iPhone

In certain situations the iphone may require a manual override code to be entered before making each call. The code *182* should be entered before each full international number is called, followed by # at the end of the number.

iphone users can now download the free roamingsim application to use in conjunction with any roamingsim. The application makes using the sim quick and easy and gives direct access to your address book so you can easily dial numbers. Also has quick start guide, support numbers/email address and links to retrieve balance via SMS.

Do I need to contact all my friends and business colleagues and tell them I have a new number when I travel?
